Abstract
This narrative review explores the transformative potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in psychosocial oncology, a field dedicated to addressing the emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of individuals affected by cancer. AI-driven technologies, such as automated distress screening, chatbot interventions, and hybrid AI-human care models, offer unprecedented opportunities to enhance efficiency, improve access, and deliver personalized support. These innovations can significantly alleviate resource constraints and improve patient outcomes by addressing the multifaceted challenges of cancer care. At the same time, the review underscores the irreplaceable value of human interaction in providing empathy, navigating sensitive conversations, and addressing nuanced patient concerns. Ethical considerations, including patient comfort, privacy, and bias mitigation, remain critical to ensuring that AI aligns with patient-centered care principles. This article highlights the importance of collaboration among AI developers, clinicians, ethicists, and patients to design ethical, compassionate, and innovative AI solutions. By balancing technological advancements with human expertise, psychosocial oncology can achieve its ultimate goal: empowering patients and improving quality of life.
