Session Summary
The number of individuals with diabetes mellitus is rapidly increasing in the United States, placing more individuals at risk for developing a hyperglycemic emergency. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) are life-threatening emergencies nurses must be able to recognize and manage. This presentation provides nurses with a foundational level of knowledge of glycemic control principles and the knowledge for managing hyperglycemic emergencies.Objectives
- Identify two precipitating risk factors leading to hyperglycemic emergencies.
- Compare and contrast the clinical presentation of a patient with DKA and a patient experiencing HHS.
- List three critical interventions for the management of the patient with a hyperglycemic emergency.
