Abstract
In their article in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Conway et al. (2021) show the significance of the CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) subclass in early-stage invasive primary melanomas, particularly in the lentigo maligna melanoma histological subtype. CIMP melanomas had reduced melanoma-specific survival compared with intermediate and low methylation subtypes. This study emphasizes the importance of epigenomic changes in early-stage primary tumors that are associated with poor prognosis.
