Abstract

When COVID-19 arrived on the West Coast in early 2020, very little was known about this novel virus. But thanks to years of advanced preparation, the Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children’s Hospital Special Pathogens Program was ready to respond. With everything already in place – from our highly trained team to our specialized space, tools and technology – we were able to care for some of the first COVID patients in the country, safely, expertly and with compassion.

Today, we maintain a constant state of readiness to keep our community safe from the next high-consequence infectious disease.

Our program was established in 2015 in response to the first cases of Ebola in the United States. It is one of the only federally designated Special Pathogen Treatment Centers in the country – and the only one in the Northwest. Serving Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, the Providence Special Pathogens Program plays a critical role in the regional and national health care response system.
